Pre-Filter
The pre-filter acts as the initial screening device for Hakko fume
extractors. Relatively large particles are removed from the air
stream by a polyester filter, similar to those used in home air
conditioners. Hakko filters have an arsenate (the capability to
collect particles from the air) of 83%. Proper use and maintenance
of the pre-filter can extend the service life of the main filter, so
it is very important that they be checked at least once a week to
see if they need replacement.

HEPA Filter
The HEPA filter removes contaminants as small as 0.01 micron. This makes it
ideal for removing irritating particles that contribute to allergies and asthma.
The Hakko filter is made of a sheet of waterproof, all-glass paper with aluminum
"safe edge" separators. The filter is housed in an aluminum case. Frame joints,
separators and the filter itself are sealed to the sides of the case with
urethane for a completely leak-tight fit. The filter assembly is stable at
temperatures up to 200°F. The filter used in the Hakko
HJ3080 is rated by the DOP test at an efficiency of 98% for a particle size
of 0.3 micron. The filter used in the Hakko HJ3100 is rated at an efficiency of
99.97% by the same criteria.
Activated Carbon Filter
An activated carbon filter complements the HEPA filter. Activated carbon absorbs nearly
all organic and inorganic vapors passing through the filter. Its capacity to remove
vapors varies with the concentration of gas in the air, humidity, temperature, and the
velocity of the gas passing through the carbon. Efficiency remains constant until the
filter is depleted, meaning it has absorbed all the pollutants it can hold.
